Permissions reference
Every Buddy command and the member permission it needs, the permissions Buddy itself needs per command and feature, and how to change who can use commands.
Updated Oct 21, 2026
Two kinds of permission matter for every Buddy command: the permission you need to use it, and
the permission Buddy needs to carry it out. This page lists both. For a friendlier explanation of
roles and role order, read Permissions & roles.
How to read this page#
- Who can use it is the command's default member permission. Discord hides the command from members who don't have it. "Everyone" means any member who can see the channel.
- "Checked by Buddy" means Buddy checks extra rules itself when the command runs, so the command may be visible but still refuse.
- App commands (marked member app or message app) are in the right-click menu: right-click (or long-press) a member or a message → Apps.
- Click a command to see its options in the command reference.
Admin XP commands under /xp
/xp is a shortcut to the standalone XP commands, and each subcommand needs the same permission as
its standalone version: Manage Server for settings, multipliers, events, blacklists and bonus
settings, Manage Roles for /xp roles. /xp rank, /xp leaderboard, /xp rewards, /xp stats and
/xp bonusalerts are open to everyone.

Changing who can use commands#
You have two tools, and they stack:
| Tool | Where | What it does |
| Discord's integration settings | Server Settings → Integrations → Discord Buddy | Allow or deny each command for roles, members or channels. This changes who can see the command. |
| Buddy's command roles | Dashboard → Command roles, or /setup → Command Roles | Limit a command (or a whole category) to chosen roles. Others get a private "This command is limited to certain roles" card. |
Command roles never block members with Administrator or Manage Server, and they don't apply to
/bump or the /spin commands, which stay open to everyone. See
Command roles.

Permissions Buddy asks for when invited#
Add to Discord on the website asks for this recommended set. It covers Buddy's features without
Administrator, and it's the same set the /setup health check compares Buddy's role against and that
the Fix permissions buttons re-authorize Buddy with.
| Permission | Used for |
| View Channels, Send Messages, Embed Links | Every command and post |
| Send Messages in Threads | Forum support and replies in threads |
| Attach Files | Welcome images, rank cards, leaderboards and other image posts |
| Read Message History | Ticket transcripts, reaction roles, /showdown, /vibecheck |
| Add Reactions | Reaction roles, starboard auto star, /showdown |
| Use External Emojis | Custom emoji from other servers in Buddy's messages and reactions |
| Mention Everyone | Pinging @everyone, @here or roles that aren't normally mentionable, for example in announcements and alerts |
| Manage Messages | Message filters, /prune, counting channel, editing posted embeds, auto-publish |
| Manage Threads | Forum support status buttons |
| Manage Roles | Join, button, reaction and reward roles, mute roles |
| Manage Channels | Ticket channels, event timers, counter channels |
| Manage Server | Banner and icon rotation, invite tracking |
| Create Invite | /invite create |
| Change Nickname | The bot nickname from Bot settings |
| Kick Members, Ban Members, Timeout Members | /kick, /ban, /unban, /mute and spam alerts |
| View Audit Log | Naming the moderator in server logs ban entries |
Not included: Administrator, which only /echo and /botinfo need. Add it to Buddy's role if
you use those. Inviting from My Discords or the dashboard's server rail asks for
Administrator instead.
Permissions Buddy needs for commands#
Every command needs Buddy to have View Channel and Send Messages in the channel where it's used.
If Buddy is missing something it replies privately with "Buddy is missing a permission" and names it.
Members with Manage Server also get a Fix permissions button. See
Cards Buddy shows.
