Story mode
Start an AI choose-your-own-adventure with /story-mode. Buddy turns recent chat into a short story and the channel votes on what happens next.
On this page
/story-mode starts a short interactive adventure built from whatever your channel has been talking
about. Buddy writes a scene and ends it with a question or a few numbered choices. Members reply in
chat, and Buddy continues the story based on what they say.
Before you start#
Story mode uses OpenAI to write the story. See AI and your messages for what's sent.
While a story runs, Buddy reads every message in the channel, so a dedicated #story-time or
#games channel works best.
How to play#
Type /story-mode. There are no options: Buddy uses the last 20 messages in the channel as
inspiration.
Buddy posts the first part of the story, ending with a question or numbered choices.
Reply in the channel, e.g. 2 or "we open the mysterious door". Buddy waits about 5 seconds after
the last message, then continues the story using everyone's replies.
The story ends after 5 minutes without new messages, or when it reaches its limit. Buddy posts "Story mode ended due to inactivity." or "Story mode ended (session limit reached)."
/story-mode EveryoneCreate a short adventure using recent chat topics.
Anyone who can send messages can start a story, unless you limit it with command roles.
Limits#
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Stories per channel | One at a time. Starting another says "A story is already running in this channel." |
| Starting a story | Once per minute per member |
| Story length | Up to 30 minutes, or 30 story parts from Buddy, whichever comes first |
| Idle timeout | 5 minutes without a message ends the story |
| Server AI budget | AI commands share a per-server budget of 12 AI replies a minute. If you hit it, Buddy waits and then continues. |
Long story parts are split across several messages. Buddy's messages never ping anyone.
AI and your messages#
When you use /story-mode, Buddy sends this to OpenAI:
- The text of the last 20 messages in the channel, to start the story.
- The text of messages people send in the channel while the story is running (up to 20 at a time).
Message text is sent without usernames. Nothing is sent before you run the command or after the story ends. The AI is told to keep the story kind and family friendly. See the Privacy Policy for how this text is handled.
Examples#
You and your friends find a dusty map tucked inside an old Minecraft guidebook. A glowing X marks a spot deep in the Nether, and a note reads: "Only the bravest builders return."
What do you do?
- Gather supplies and head for the portal
- Show the map to the village librarian first
- Burn it. Nothing good comes from the Nether.

Troubleshooting#
"AI commands are cooling down. Try again in 42s."#
You started an AI command less than a minute ago, or the server has used its AI budget for this minute. Wait the time shown.
"OpenAI API key not configured."#
The AI isn't available on Buddy right now. Try again later.
The story is about something random#
Buddy uses the last 20 messages for ideas. In a quiet or brand new channel there isn't much to go on, so chat a little about the theme you want first, then start the story.
The story stopped#
It ended after 5 minutes of silence, 30 minutes in total or 30 parts. Start a new one with /story-mode.
