Counting channel

Run a counting game where members count up together, one number per message. Buddy removes wrong numbers and can step in to fix the count.

A counting channel is a simple community game: members take turns posting the next number, 1, 2, 3 and up, and see how high the server can get. Buddy keeps the count, deletes anything that isn't the next number, and teases whoever got it wrong.

Looking for member-count channels?

Voice channels that show live member, bot or role counts are a different feature: see Counter channels.

Before you start#

Permissions needed

In the counting channel, Buddy needs View Channel, Send Messages and Manage Messages. Without Manage Messages or Send Messages, counting doesn't run at all in that channel.

Create a text channel for the game first, like #counting. Keep it for counting only: every message that isn't the next number gets deleted, including normal chat.

Set it up#

Open Counting channel in your dashboard

It's under Levels & engagement in the sidebar.

Pick the channel

In the Counting channel card, choose your channel from Counting channel.

Choose auto correct

Set Auto correct to Enabled if you want Buddy to post the correct next number when someone gets it wrong.

Save

Click Save counter settings. The first number is 1.

Open counting settings

To turn counting off, set Counting channel to Disabled - Select Channel to Enable and save.

Set it up from Discord#

Run /setup feature:Counting Channel (or /setup → Levels & engagement → Edit next to Counting channel). Pick the channel and turn Auto-correct on or off. The panel shows the current count and the next number, and Reset count to 0 starts the count again from 1.

How counting works#

  • The next number only. A message counts when it's exactly the next number, like 42. Extra text (42! or 42 lol) doesn't count.
  • Anyone can count, in any order. The same member can post several numbers in a row; Buddy doesn't require turns.
  • Wrong numbers are removed. Anything else is deleted, and Buddy replies with a teasing message that mentions the member, like "who taught you how to count? 🤣". The reply deletes itself after a minute.
  • A mistake doesn't reset the count. The count stays where it was. The next correct number is the same as before the mistake.
  • Buddy keeps it moving. If nobody posts the next number within 30 seconds of a correct count, Buddy posts it itself.
  • Auto correct. When Auto correct is Enabled, after a wrong number Buddy also says "Let me help you out..." (deleted after a minute) and posts the correct next number, which moves the count on by one.

Counting starts at 1 the first time you set a channel. There's no reset command. If you move counting to a different channel, the count carries over from where it was.

Examples#

A normal run, with Buddy stepping in after a mistake (Auto correct on):

Sam Today at 4:20 PM

41

Alex Today at 4:20 PM

42

Jordan Today at 4:20 PM

44

Discord Buddy APP Today at 4:20 PM

@Jordan who taught you how to count? 🤣

Discord Buddy APP Today at 4:20 PM

Let me help you out...

Discord Buddy APP Today at 4:20 PM

43

Jordan's 44 is deleted, Buddy posts 43, and the next correct number is 44.

Keep XP out of the game

Numbers below 1000 are too short to earn XP (messages need at least 4 characters), but once the count reaches 1000 every number could. Add your counting channel to No-XP channels on the XP & levels page to keep it out of XP.

Slow mode helps

If two people post the same number at the same moment, both can be accepted. On a busy server, a few seconds of Discord Slowmode on the channel keeps the game tidy.

Troubleshooting#

Nothing happens when people count#

  • Check a Counting channel is selected and saved.
  • Buddy needs Manage Messages and Send Messages in that channel. If either is missing, counting is skipped there.
  • The channel isn't in the list? Run /setup feature: Update Channels and Roles for Website in Discord, then reload the dashboard.

Correct numbers are being deleted#

The message must be the number on its own. Check what the current count is: scroll up to the last number that wasn't deleted (Buddy's own numbers count too). If Buddy posted a number after 30 seconds of silence, the next number is one higher than that.

Buddy deletes normal messages in the channel#

That's expected: everything that isn't the next number is removed. Use a separate channel for chatting about the game.

I want to start again from 1#

Run /setup feature:Counting Channel and press Reset count to 0, then confirm. The next number is 1. Switching to a new channel keeps the current count, so reset it if you want a fresh start there.
