Rotating server icons

Upload a set of server icons and let Buddy rotate them on a schedule, with playlists for seasonal sets and member submissions from Discord.

The icon manager works like the banner manager, but for your server icon (the round picture in everyone's server list). Upload a few icons, mark the ones you want as Active, and Buddy swaps them on a schedule. Great for seasonal looks, event themes or just keeping things fun. Unlike banners, rotating icons don't need any boosts.

Before you start#

Permissions needed

Buddy needs Manage Server to change the server icon. Staff who approve, disable or delete icons from Discord need Manage Messages.

  • Image size: use square images, ideally 512x512. JPEG, PNG and GIF are supported. Dashboard uploads must be under 5 MB.
  • Animated icons (GIF) need Boost Level 1 or higher. Without it, Buddy skips GIF icons and moves on to the next one.
  • Free servers can have up to 5 Active icons and rotate every 4 hours. Premium raises both (see Premium).

Set it up#

Open Icon manager in your dashboard

It's under Branding in the sidebar.

Upload an icon

In Icon images, choose a file under Upload an icon and click Upload icon. New uploads start as Pending.

Make it Active

Change the icon's Status to Active in the Icon images table. Changes save as soon as you pick an option.

Check the playlist

Icons start in the default playlist, which is active unless you change it. Only Active icons in the Active playlist rotate.

Choose how often it changes

In Rotation interval, pick how often to Change icon and click Save interval.

Open the icon manager

When you activate your first icon from Discord, Buddy uploads it straight away. After that, it moves to the next Active icon at each interval, in upload order, and loops back to the start.

Icons are uploaded exactly as you made them. Buddy doesn't crop them or add a watermark, so square images look best.

Icon statuses#

StatusMeaning
PendingUploaded but not approved. Every new upload starts here. Never rotates.
ActiveApproved and part of the rotation (if it's in the Active playlist).
DisabledKept but skipped. Buddy disables an icon automatically if its file is 10 MB or larger.

Icon playlists#

Playlists let you keep separate sets, like a normal set and a holiday set, and switch which one rotates. On the Icon manager page:

  1. Create a playlist under Playlists (New playlist, then Create playlist).
  2. Move icons into it with the Playlist menu in Icon images.
  3. Pick it in Active playlist and click Save active playlist.

You can have up to 10 playlists, including default. Deleting a playlist moves its icons back to default. Playlists work the same way as banner playlists; see Banner playlists and overlays for the details and naming rules.

Premium#

Active icons5More, depending on your plan
Fastest rotationEvery 4 hoursEvery hour, 30 minutes or 15 minutes, depending on your plan

The Icon manager page shows how many Active icons you're using against your limit. Compare plans on the Premium page.

Icon uploads, from Discord or the dashboard, don't need Premium. A plan that includes no icons refuses uploads with a private message.

Troubleshooting#

The icon never changes#

  • At least one icon must be Active and in the Active playlist. New uploads are Pending.
  • Buddy needs Manage Server.
  • With only one Active icon, there's nothing to rotate to.
  • Run /icon_status to see the rotation frequency, the next update and how many icons are Active.

My GIF icon is skipped#

Animated icons need Boost Level 1 or higher. Until then, Buddy skips GIFs and uses the next icon.

"This server has reached max number of active icons"#

You've hit your plan's limit. Disable an icon you don't need, or upgrade to Premium.

My upload was rejected#

Dashboard uploads must be a JPEG, PNG or GIF under 5 MB. In Discord, the file must be a .jpg, .jpeg, .png or .gif image.
